Kids Helping Kids

We are offering a FREE special class.  During Winter Break, to kids ages eight and up.  The kids will learn how to make a pillowcase which they will then donate to a kid who is ill and staying at "Ronald McDonald House."  The kids will be allowed to choose their own fabric kit from the shop and we will donate the fabric and thread for their use.  This class is an easy and cost free way to get kids involved in helping others.  We hope you have a child who would be willing to help us wih this project.  Registration is required.

3D Projects

505: Coiled Pots (click for description)

Coasters - trivets - baskets, you'll be able to create all of these quite inexpensively after you learn this quick and easy technique. Machine stitched, you will leave class with a finished pot!

Getting Started

0101: Start Quilting (Click for details)

Creating the “Sampler Quilt” from Alex Anderson’s “Start Quilting” book will teach you how to make six different blocks. The basics for quilt making taught in this class will be lessons learned that you can use in all of your future quilt projects.

0102: Quick and Easy (Click for details)

This class will teach you how to make a quilt in less than a day. Choose a favorite fabric to highlight in the center or choose one you just don’t want to cut up. You will be quilting as you add each border on. This method is great for kids quilts, for charity quilts or if you just need a quilt in a hurry.

Hand Sewing Techniques

The finished size of this quilt is 11”x12 1/4”, but don’t let that intimidate you! Believe it or not you will only be sewing squares together to make this little masterpiece that looks so much more difficult than it is. An acrylic template which comes with the pattern is the secret to the success of this little beauty.

Learn freezer paper appliqué as you create this floral butterfly block which can be used as a pillow or wall hanging. In this class you will learn to make invisible appliqué stitches using a method not taught in any book that we have ever seen! Sharp points, inside corners, small circles and narrow bias will all be covered.

You will learn machine and hand sewing techniques to create basic cathedral window blocks. There are a lot of variations which will be discussed that you may not be aware of. This block is much more variable than the basic traditional block. Our sample is made using silk insets, which would give you the opportunity to work with a different fabric other than traditional cotton in your quilt making, if you so choose.

Long Arm Machine Techniques

Sherri will demonstrate basic quilting techniques and share machine quilting tips for the beginning machine quilter. She will give an introduction to block patterns, border designs, quilting tools and will discuss tension; and how thread, batting and fabric choices can affect it. Questions are encouraged!

Feathers are one of the most traditional quilting designs and are a fun way to add texture and movement to a quilt! Feathers designs range from simple to extraordinary. We’ll begin by learning how to stitch some simple freehand feather designs for blocks and borders and then, as time permits, step it up with some variations using stencils, template and marking techniques.

If you are looking for the next step in custom machine quilting with your long-arm or mid-arm machine, this is the class for you! Machine Quilting with Templates will explore some of the possibilities of what you can create with your machine, an extended base and acrylic templates. We will try various basic templates; such as straight edge, circles, serpentine, and ovals. We’ll also play with some other fun shapes as time permits. This is primarily a drawing class using templates, but everyone will have a chance at “hands on” time at the Handi-Quilter machine to practice what they have drawn.

Do you have a quilting machine with the capability of doing pantographs, but you’ve just never quite figured out how to make it work? If this is your situation, this is the class for you. Mindy will answer all your questions as she explains and demonstrates the process of pantograph quilting. She will begin by teaching you how to adjust the pantograph and laser light. Than she will teach you when and how to roll the quilt to keep your pattern lined up perfectly from row to row.

Paper Piecing

Have you heard the horror stories about pineapple blocks? Paper piecing is the method used for this quilt which will give you very precise piecing and accurate results.Combining the flying geese blocks within the pineapple blocks adds a dramatic dimensional effect.

Basic paper piecing skills are required to take this class. Pam will teach you all of her tricks to simplify these challenging blocks. Sewing Machine Quilting

Nothing will keep you warmer on a cold winter day than a soft and cozy flannel rag quilt. If you have never made a quilt before or have never worked with flannel, this is probably a really great choice for you. The best thing about a rag quilt is that you quilt each block as you go, so you can finish the quilt yourself, from beginning to end. We want to give you fair warning; everyone in your house will be fighting over who gets to use the rag quilt. You may want to plan to make more than one right from the start. Linda Bentz

Learn how to make a Lone Star quilt using an easy method created by pattern designer Debby Maddy. This quilt pattern which is usually very intimidating can actually be done without any Y seams. Techniques

0402: Picture Piecing (Click for details)

Cynthia England's “Picture Piecing” technique is simply amazing. She breaks down her patterns in very manageable segments and with a minimal number of fabrics gets exceptional results. Linda will take you step by step through the process as you make the beginning butterfly block. When you are finished you will be able to move on with confidence to any one of Cynthia’s other patterns. This is a great technique for creating any still life or landscape type of quilt. You may even want to create your own patterns using this method.
